Full-Time Permanent Role, Based in Waterloo

Base salary starting from $104,335.27 ($109,552.03 as of 1 July) per annum + super

About the Role:

The New South Wales Nurses and Midwives’ Association (NSWNMA) in association with the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation New South Wales Branch (ANMF NSW Branch) is seeking an Assistant Legal Officer (Paralegal) to join our Professional Services team.

You’ll provide high-quality legal and administrative support to Legal Officers and assist members with matters such as Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) processes, Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) registration issues, and other legal matters. You’ll also manage your own caseload under supervision and help maintain efficient systems within the Legal Services team.


In this role you will:

  • Conduct interviews with members and take statements (instructions)
  • Perform administrative tasks such as obtaining details from members for files, obtaining photocopies of relevant documents, taking file notes and other administrative tasks as required
  • Allocate cases to Legal Officers and Paralegals under the direction and guidance of the Manager
  • Communicate in a timely manner with Legal Officers and members in relation to progress of matters
  • Work towards representing members at the Nursing and Midwifery Council, under the direction of a Legal Officer
  • Regular updating of Legal lists for the team as well as ensuring accurate updated information for public interest immunity
  • Undertake legal research as instructed
  • Assist in preparation of documents especially in relation to presentation and format
  • Assist with drafting, preparation and review of legal documentation, such as statements of members
  • Assist with the correspondence of the Legal Officers in an efficient and timely manner


To be considered for this role you require:

  • To be currently studying a law-related tertiary degree
  • Experience in an administrative or legal role
  • Strong paralegal knowledge and attention to detail
  • Excellent time management and organisational skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365
  • Strong interpersonal skills and commitment to confidentiality
  • Alignment with trade union values
