About the Association:
The New South Wales Nurses and Midwives’ Association (NSWNMA) is the registered union for all nurses and midwives in NSW. The Association represents the industrial interests of nurses and midwives employed in NSW in the public, private, aged care and primary healthcare sectors. Our role is to protect the interests of nurses, midwives and the nursing and midwifery professions.

About the role:
As an Industrial Officer, you will play a pivotal role in advancing the industrial interests of nurses and midwives across NSW. Working within the Organising Private Hospitals and Aged Care Team, you will provide expert industrial advice, support collective bargaining, advocate in tribunals, and contribute to strategic campaigns that build member power and drive meaningful workplace change.
This role is integral to supporting high-density, action focused, member-led networks and strengthening the union’s collective capacity to win.
In this role you will:
- Collaborate closely with Organisers, Campaign Officers and other internal stakeholders on strategic industrial and organising campaigns.
- Provide high quality industrial advice to support campaign planning, communications, and member engagement.
- Lead or participate in enterprise bargaining negotiations, including developing and executing bargaining strategies.
- Prepare member research, develop innovative claims, and guide consultation and endorsement processes.
- Prepare and present matters before industrial tribunals, including drafting submissions and evidence.
- Deliver high quality written materials, reports, and industrial analysis for members and internal bodies.
- Represent the Association in external forums and contribute to broader industrial policy development.
- Provide professional guidance and leadership on industrial matters within the team.
To be considered for this position you require:
Essential:
- Demonstrated commitment to the trade union movement.
- Commitment to advancing the nursing and midwifery professions.
- Thorough working knowledge of contemporary industrial relations legislation and practices.
- Experience or knowledge in negotiating collective agreements and tribunal advocacy.
- Ability to relate effectively with members, delegates, potential members and employer representatives.
- Well-developed negotiation, advocacy, research and analytical skills.
- High level of initiative with ability to manage competing priorities in a fast paced environment.
- Sound judgment in complex and sensitive industrial matters.
- Ability to work effectively in a political and team based environment.
- Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
- Capacity to self manage and work to tight deadlines.
- Commitment to organising frameworks and willingness to learn where required.
- Strong digital literacy including Word, email, Excel and internet research.
- Current Class 1A driver’s licence.
Relevant tertiary education:
- A degree in industrial relations, law, arts, social sciences or a related field; or
- Extensive experience in the specialist industrial relations field supported by diplomas or continuing education in IR.
Desirable:
- Experience in related fields such as work as a Union Organiser, Industrial Research Officer or employment/IR lawyer.
- Prior working experience in the trade union movement is an additional benefit but not a requirement.
